What Makes a House a Home?
There are many things that go into making a home feel like home. Whether you define “home” as where you grew up or where your parents currently live, the place where you find comfort or are raising your own family or simply where the wifi is located, the defining characteristics of a home are probably different for you than they are for someone else. However, there are some common themes shown in research exploring what makes a house a home.
What is “Home?”
Each year Ikea releases a survey compiled with thousands of peoples’ opinions on what makes a home a home. This year the report has shown that people believe a home is a safe haven where relationships, meaningful space, and things all come together.
Home is also defined by our ability to see, smell, taste, and touch. The reason for this is because our senses give us the understanding of what home is and what a home feels like. Sixty-three percent of respondents said that cooking helps them feel at home, while 59 percent said playing music helps them feel at home. As for the other senses, 18 percent say that they prefer particular lighting and noises. For example, a study done on a group of people living in India said that an urban muffling noise would improve their overall well being.
Beyond the walls of the home, 38 percent of respondents reported that their neighborhood gave them a sense of home. This has been claimed to have a possible tie to the participation in community organizations. Some even reported to have felt more at home outside of their house, such as when enjoying the company of neighbors or partaking in community events.
Many people reported that the sentimental value attached to objects adds to the bliss they enjoy at home. The attachment they have to these items creates a desire for the owner to care for them. For example, over half of these people said they prefer to fix something they own that is broken rather than replace it. They said that the objects in their home hold many memories and are a reflection of who they are.
