What Buyers Look for in an Outdoor Space

What Buyers Look for in an Outdoor Space

When making home improvements, it’s always a smart move to keep in mind what will draw in potential future buyers should you decide to sell. For outdoor spaces in particular, there are several key elements which can be incorporated that are sure to have buyers competing to call your home their own when it goes to market.

Let There Be Light

Outdoor lighting is an essential component in an outdoor space. Not only does plenty of light make the space more functional for use after dark, it also serves as a security feature. Criminals are far less likely to target a well-lit home.

How About a Little Privacy?

Privacy is important, and that includes the backyard. Current homeowners and future buyers will want to relax in the home’s outdoor space without feeling like they are on display, so consider adding a screen-enclosed area, pergola, gazebo, or landscaping buffer that lends itself to creating more privacy.

Don’t Be Too High Maintenance, or Be Prepared to Hire Someone

Beautiful landscaping is a surefire way to attract a buyer, understanding that on-going maintenance will be necessary. With this in mind, consider selecting plants that require less attention (think perennials), and having a gardener, landscaper, or your own green thumb to service and maintain your property. Also consider investing in an automatic sprinkler system, if one is not already installed.

Make Functional Additions

When making improvements to your outdoor space, consider the additions that also add functional value. Functional items like permanent built-in seating, fire pits, sheds, and outdoor shelters appeal to buyers because they are features that increase qualify of life. Of course, incorporating some sought after design trends, like natural wood and stone features with these additions will increase your home’s value and the appeal of your outdoor space.
